Education and skills training

The South West is well known for its farming industry and approximately 12% of England's food and drink manufacturing employment is in the South West. The sector contributes around £2.6 billion to the region, and key driving factors include changes in consumer demand, evolving technology, market power and changes in legislation and regulation.
What is less well known is that the land-based industries are facing a massive skills shortage in the coming years, with 250,000 new entrants required by 2020. Add to this the requirement for skilled engineers, project managers and logistics specialists to keep the food manufacturing and distribution industry ticking over, and you begin to realise the important role that training providers play in ensuring that relevant and accessible training is available to individuals and employers.
As a leading training provider within the region, Bridgwater College seeks to respond quickly and efficiently to industry demand. To that end, we consult with a large number of local employers throughout the industry, both large and small, using their advice and feedback to model our curriculum, which currently encompasses sustainable food production, animal welfare and food safety and hygiene, as well as refrigeration, logistics and electrical and engineering programmes.
We are fortunate to have facilities at our Cannington Centre that are second to none in the region, including a 180-hectare commercial farm with both dairy and sheep enterprises that showcase the latest technology and provide an excellent resource for training as well as a profitable commercial business.
Our focus lies in ensuring that our students leave us not only with all of the relevant and necessary qualifications, but also with the mind-set that they are the future of the industry and have an important role to play in shaping its values and culture.
